Finding a Silver Lining
Created By: Barbara L Buchanan

My mother had a stroke in January 2003, and needed to be in a nursing home for 24/7 care. Mom crocheted all her life, making beautiful doilies, bedspreads and tablecloths, though she gave all of them away over the years.

The stroke caused Mom physical and mental problems with her crocheting, but I dug out my crochet hooks and yarn and began bringing projects when I was visiting her, to keep her interested and busy with her own projects. Another patient in the nursing home, there for post-surgery physical therapy, began talking crochet with us and invited me to come to the charity knit and crochet group at our seniors' center. I joined the group and found a lot of pleasure in making lap-sized afghans and shawls for the local hospitals and nursing homes, using donated yarns. Later that year I returned to knitting as well.

The next summer a yarn shop opened in our town and I became an avid knitter and crocheter, with a lot of yarn in my stash. I also discovered the Internet knitting and crochet community, and I've gained a lot of friends both online and in real life, with those whom I've been able to meet as I travel. I meet with others at several regular SnB groups, as well as continuing my work with the seniors' group.

My mother can no longer crochet, and it is sad to see how ill she has become from the ongoing little strokes. But I have gained many good friends, and much satisfaction from my knitting and crocheting.
