Mom and Me
Created By: Betty Nola
I had polio when I was five years old. By age six I was home from the hospital but not able to go out to school.. Mom was "stuck" at home taking care of me although she made it seem like fun for us both. One of our neighbor ladies had learned to crochet and offered to teach mom. As she learned, Mom taught me. There is no way to explain the comfort of always having my "old friend" crochet whether I was at home or in the hospital. When my parents couldn't be with me, I always had my crochet hook and yarn. As time went by, I was able to go to school part of the time and developed other interests but I never lost my love of crochet.
Mom passed along her knowledge to her three children, (my brother included!) and later to her daughter-in-law and grandchildren. Just recently, I saw one of my great-nieces crochetting a scarf. "Mom taught me," she said. "It's a tradition." Indeed it is! Many people benefitted from my mother's crochet items and from her teaching others this fine hobby. I am 63 years old and Mom has been gone for more than 20 years. But I still feel close to her when I crochet.
