My Husband Was in a Coma When I Taught Myself How to Knit and Crochet
Created By: Laurel Bishop
I was 55, four years ago, and desperate to do something in ICU while Jeb lay in a coma, after open heart surgery. Life was not good. I was trying not to go over the edge and reading was useless. I needed to DO something new. I was only allowed 10 minutes a day to see him. I was running out of ideas and had no one to talk to, so I made a deal with myself: if I could teach myself to knit and crochet from a library book, Jeb might wake up. It consumed me, I'd always wanted to learn those skills. I was determined to learn. For weeks I ripped out, but I never gave up. He woke up! As if nothing ever happened and said "Hi, how have you been?" I showed him my simple attempts at jewelry and he was in shock. It took him nearly a year to recover, but I've been knitting and crocheting daily ever since. It's my life and it gives me peace. Jeb's proud of me, my original designs, my dedication, and my skills have so improved. I know why I learned--I was meant to at that moment in my life--to save his.
