A Blessing
Created By: Marion Layton

After becoming a nurse, 39years ago, I learned to knit and crochet from co-workers during downtime on the overnight shift. I knit a poncho, and baby blankets for friends, started crocheting an afghan.
During the next 30 years I would work on the afghan when I wasn't busy and it almost became a joke as to if I would ever finish it. My Mom helped me knit a sweater for my youngest son when we lived near her, she had said she would have taught me how years ago but she thought I had no interest. I did finish the afghan a few years ago mainly after my children were grown.
Then about a year ago, I became seriously ill and though I didn't feel sick I was. In order to pass the time I decided to take up crafts again and finished a needlepoint I had started earlier. While going to a craft store for ideas I learned they were collecting eight inch grannie squares from people that they could then put together for blankets for those in need. I spent the next month making grannie squares from all the yarn I had collected over the years.
A few months ago, I was told about prayer shawls. I went to my church's knitting/crocheting time for seniors because they had first mentioned making prayer shawls. I was given a pattern and they were also using the Lion Brand Prayer Shawl book. I purchased one and have spent the last few months making prayer shawl for people I knew or were related to someone I knew. I have made eight so far and I am in the process of making two more.
Not only has it given me something to do however it has also allowed me to give comfort to others. I do not put my name on the information I give them with the prayer shawl as I believe they are for the glory of God alone. I would like to form a charity for my prayer shawl ministry however I am not sure how to do that. My crocheting has given me a purpose during this time when I can no longer work. I hope it has brought comfort to others also.
