My Dream Come True
Created By: Marilyn Ragogna

The memories of my growing up years revolve around my grandmother who raised me while my mother worked. My father died when I was very young so we went to live with grandma. Grandma was always crocheting or cooking. I used to watch her make delicate and beautiful table-cloths. I never had any interest in learning but loved to watch. I still have the hankies that she crocheted for me and treasure them. It's like a part of her is still here with me. My mom used to knit in her free time but between working long hours and trying to spend as much time with me as possible knitting was usually put aside.

As I got older and my children were growing up and going out on their own, I kept thinking about something to do in my spare time (spare time that I never thought I would ever have). When my oldest daughter told me she was expecting I wanted to do something special for her, I wanted to give her a "memory gift". It all came so naturally to me, why not crochet something for my first grand-child.
My sister-in-law who is an expert knitter & crocheter taught me some stitches and I made a blanket. It all started coming back to me the memories of my grandmother crocheting and although she never taught me (because I didn't want to learn) I kept seeing the beautiful things she made, I guess they were locked up in my "memory bank", just waiting for me to draw on it.
The next thing I know I was at the knitting store buying yarn to make a sweater set for my grand-child to come home in. Naturally it was all white and I must say beautiful, I was so proud of myself but more proud and happy to share this gift with my grand-son (yes, it was a boy and his name is David, he is 23 years old now and serving in the Navy in Bahrain). All together I have seven grand-children ages 9 to 23. I have taught all the girls to crochet and now Emily who is the youngest will be learning this summer.

I baby-sit in my spare time and have taught some of the girls crocheting and knitting. I must say I am most proud of a special little girl I take care of, her name is Anna Grace and she has learned to knit at the ripe young age of 7. It was so amazing to me because of how fast she has learned and how much she loves it.

She was so proud to knit a "throw" for her nanna's doll house. And what a beautiful memory her nanna has of her grand-child making her this special gift.

I have been blessed with many blessings, a wonderful husband, 4 great children and 7 grandchildren but my most memorable blessing is my grand-mother who in her silence and sometimes not so silent, has taught me to be the person I am today.

Crocheting & knitting are more than a part of my life they are my dreams come true, because whenever I want to I can dream and crochet or knit a beautiful memory.
