At 10, I remember crying for a crochet hook, a...

At 10, I remember crying for a crochet hook, a book, and a bundle of yarn. My mother stood there telling me it would be just like everything else in the corner in a week. She went ahead and bought what I asked for. I knew she had done it so she could say I told you so.

In 2 weeks I was asking my mother for some more yarn. She looked at me a bit shocked. But she said she would buy the yarn as long as I showed some thing I had made out of it. So I agreed. Little did she know what I was going to come up with.

In 5 weeks I handed my grandmother a granny square afghan. My grandmother was so proud of that thing, and so was I. In fact when she passed on I became the owner of that afghan.

I have been crocheting for 40 years now. I became disabled from taking a medication that made me disabled. I have been restricted from doing a lot of things. If it had not been for crochet I would have lost my sense of self. It kept me in check. Let me know I could still do one of the things I loved most in life. Crocheting and giving gifts. In all of these years I have never made any thing for myself.

2 years ago I taught myself how to knit. I am finally planning a knitted hoodie with crochet trim. That is soon as I finish a baby afghan.

I thank all the women who passed down crafts of any kind. They kept a tradition alive. And I am very proud to be part of some part of the scheme of things.
