At A Loss
Created By: STEPHANIE GLICKMAN
My mom taught me knitting when I was a little girl but I never felt I did it very well and I gave up trying in my early 30's. When my son died in 2001, I was at a loss in more ways then one. Grieving is a very difficult thing to do and one of the worse times for me was when I would wait for my husband to get ready to go somewhere. I noticed a knitting store in the area where I worked and they were advertising lessons for beginners and almost beginners. I thought that would be a good place to go and try something that wouldn't be too challenging, since I had done it before, but would keep me busy. I also wanted to be with other women to talk and feel as if things were normal. It worked! Although I haven't gone much beyond scarves and afghans I just love the peace and tranquility it offers. I would say it is the one thing that has really helped my grieving and also given me an opportunity to participate in a volunteer capacity without going out to volunteer. I knit and donate scarves to a local organization called The Baby Corner and also donate throws and afghans to Project Linus. It makes me feel good to know I am helping some other child out there and I can do this from the comfort of my home. There were many times I wouldn't have the strength to go out so this has been a blessing to me. Knitting is my meditation and has added more to my life then I could have ever imagined.
