knitting :cheaper than therapy and twice as relaxing
Created By: R Ryann

I was a very figity and hyper child growing up. The only time i would sit still was to watch my two grandmothers: my Nana and my Noni. My Nana was a speedy knitter...we used to joke that if you watched her for long enough, you could see sparks fly off her needles. My Noni was a seamstress, sewing for our whole town. Between watching the two of them, i learned how to do what they did. Soon, i calmed down and became obcessed with knitting.

Fast forward to last year. My Nana has since passed away. I'm starting my Senior year of college at Drexel University, majoring is fashion design. Just before Thanksgiving, my Noni was diagnosed with cancer in her esophogas. She died December 1st that same year, from complications. I left school for a month, barely finishing the term. While home, i was panicking that i was in the wrong major, that i wasnt happy with my life, and i was going to graduate with a useless degree. Between the tears and sobbing, i picked up an old pair of knitting needles and some yarn i found and knit myself a scarf. It only took a few hours, but i felt myself zone out and just focus on the stitches.

When i went back to school, i started knitting sweaters. I started knitting more and more, and eventually these sweaters ended up im my final collection, which is going to be in a fashion show.

A few side effects also happend along the way. My acid reflux subsided, because i wasn'st so anxious all the time. I also found myself loosing weight because i was knitting infont of tv, instead of snacking! Now, i know i'm in the right major, and am assembling a knitwear portfolio with dreams of becoming a knitwear designer!!
