The Gift of Knitting
Created By: Gloria Ericsen

I have been knitting since I was about 6 years old, having been taught by my grandmother. This hobby was one of may handwork hobbies that I acquired at the knees of Grandma and Mommy oh, so many years ago. A time came when I stopped it all, with no one to produce for and nothing that inspired me to pick up needles again.....until I read about the "Prayer Shawl Ministry." All of a sudden, my heart jumped and my mind started racing as I thought merrily about how I could help someone else, simply and easily from the comfort of my easy chair by creating a prayer shawl. I took this joyous discovery further by sharing it at my church and helped to start "Hearts to Hands", a group of women who come together once a month and knit, crochet, sew and quilt. We are producing not only shawls and lap robes, baby blankets and hats, but bereavement gowns for miscarried babies, preemie "going home" outfits, pillows for mastectomy victims, polar fleece hats for children who have lost their hair due to chemo, and on and on. We all believe that sharing of a small portion of our lives, using our time honored skills to make the lives of others a bit more comfortable is a blessing that will keep on giving as some of the shawls are even passed on to others from the original recipient who is aware of another's need for comfort. Gloria Ericsen

(Homespun is one of our favorite yarns for the shawls and lap robes because it works up so beautifully, is super soft and able to be laundered with ease.)
