Grandchildren
Created By: SUE BEN DOR
When I first became a grandmother some thirteen years ago, of course I made the little blanket and sweater and hat and booties. The baby quickly grew out of them and I began to think that I might want to do something more lasting. I had become interested in the afghan stitch and wanted to make
something using that stitch, so I decided to make my little grandson an afghan. I used a very straightforward pattern of squares and to make it special in every other square I embroidered his name. It was white with the blue-green homespun and made a lovely, sturdy, warm blanket for my grandchild. He had it on his bed all year round and
refused to let it be removed in summertime. Several years later he was joined by a sister, and I decided that she also needed her own afghan. Hers was the same as his except I used pink as the contrast between the white boxes. She got a heart in the center square and her name in each alternate square. Next came another girl and another afghan.
Finally another male grandchild came three years ago and I am now working on the fourth afghan. The oldest has said that since I made his when he was a little guy he needs more squares because his is a little short. All of the afghans were made using Lion Brand white and either blue-green or pink
in the homespun and a large afghan hook. Several months ago my children’s home was damaged by a tree during a windstorm and the girls’ bedrooms were hit. Of the few things they were able to retrieve their afghans were the most important.
They all have their afghans on their beds in their temporary place and they have all told me how their afghans made it feel a little more like home after the trauma of the tree.
