Relaxing Crochet
Created By: Linda Walsh

When I was a teenager, I learned to crochet from my grandmother. She basically had one set pattern and made everything in it, from scarves to afghans. Her pattern was ten double crochets and then three shells, continuing until she had the size she wanted.

I remember spending many afternoons at her little apartment as she patiently taught me. I could do her pattern but I never realized where it would take me.

Then I just walked away from crochet. I was working full time, going to college full time, dating and all the rest of what a young person does.

I met my future husband in the spring of 1987. We dated for a while and then we got married in 1988. We were happy in our little apartment, and we decided it was time for children.

We found a house to move into, but we were having difficulties getting financing. Most of our stuff was packed and I had no place to nest. So I took a refresher class in crochet and began again. I made several blankets while waiting to move and have a baby.

My daughter was born two days after we moved into our house, 50 miles away from where I grew up. I had no friends, didn't know where anything was, plus I had a new baby. It was a crazy time in my life.

I picked up crafting again, to make things for my daughter's room. I made some plastic canvas decorations and then some crochet items. When the baby slept, I did crafts.

Crafts were a way to relax. I loved to do them. But as I grew as a crafter, I self taught myself how to do more crochet stitches than Grandma O had taught me.

I made doll dresses, scarves, and other things. After my son was born, I really needed to have something I could relax with. It was difficult to find time with two little ones, but I managed.

Crochet is such a part of my life now. I can get really crabby if I don't get any time to crochet! I make gifts for anyone I know who is having a baby, and I also make hats and afghans for charities.

It is such a gift to be able to crochet something beautiful with my own two hands. I just enjoy it so much. And to be able to just relax for a little while, doing something I enjoy is a real blessing for me. Esspecially now that my kids are both crazy teenagers! I need time for me! And Crochet is my time!
