Gulls And Garter (multiple of 8 sts plus 1)

Note: the instructions below are a generic description of how to execute this stitch pattern. For a single repeat, you'd only need nine stitches (8 + 1) but you'd have a VERY narrow piece! In the example shown, there are four repeats of the stitch, so to make a swatch that looks like the one shown, you need to cast on 33 stitches (4 x the multiple of 8 plus 1 extra stitch.)

Rows 1 and 3 (WS) K2, *p5, k3; rep from *, end last rep k2. 
Row 2 K2, *wyif sl 5 sts purlwise, k3; rep from *, end last rep k2. 
Row 4 K4, *insert RH needle under strand 2 rows below, k next st on LH needle, drawing loop through st on needle and under strand in one motion, k7; rep from *, end last rep k4. 
Rep rows 1-4.
