11 sts + 7 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size
specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be
sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what
the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person.
If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller
size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Making a Gauge Swatch
BPDC (back post double crochet) Yo, insert hook from back to front then to back, going around post of indicated st, draw up a loop, (yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Skip st in front of the BPDC.
FPDC (front post double crochet) Yo, insert hook from front to back then to front, going around post of indicated st, draw up a loop, (yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Skip st behind the FPDC.
Shrug is worked as a rectangle, then folded in half and seamed.
Ch 112 (128).
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 111 (127) sts.
Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st in this row or in any of the following rows), turn, hdc in first st, dc in next st, *skip next st, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next st, skip next st dc in next st; rep from * to last st, hdc in last st – at the end of this row you should have 27 (31) (dc, ch 2, dc) groups, 28 (32) dc and 1 hdc on each end.
Row 3: Ch 2, turn, hdc in first st, FPDC in next st, *(dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp, FPDC in next st; rep from * to last st, hdc in last st.
Row 4 (WS): Ch 2, turn, hdc in first st, BPDC in next st, *(dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp, BPDC in next st; rep from * to last st, hdc in last st.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until piece measures 25 (27) in. (63.5 (68.5) cm) from beg, end with a WS row as the last row you work.
Last Row (RS): Ch 2, hdc in first st, *sc in next dc, sc in next ch-2 sp, sc in next dc, FPDC in BPDC; rep from * to last st, hdc in top of beg ch.
Row 1 (RS): From RS, working across short edge of Shrug, join yarn with sl st at right corner.
Sc evenly spaced across.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
Rep on opposite short edge of Shrug.
Fold piece in half lengthwise. Sew for 9 in. (23 cm) from each end to make sleeves, leaving 19 (24 1/2) in. (48 (62) cm) open at center for body.
Weave in ends.
