Level 1 Knit Vest

Lion Brand® Lion's Pride® Woolspun®

GAUGE:

13 sts + 24 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in Seed st.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

1. Vest is worked in one piece to armholes, then divided for fronts and back.
2. The stitch used to make this vest is Seed st. Seed st is reversible, so there is no wrong side on this Vest.
3. The collar is worked in one piece with the Vest.
4. A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.

STEP 1
Cast on 173 (211) sts.

STEP 2
Row 1:
Knit 1, *purl 1, knit 1; rep from * across the row.
Rep Row 1 (this creates Seed st) until piece measures about 17 (17 1/2) in. (43 (44.5) cm) from beginning.

STEP 3
Divide for Armholes
Next Row:
Work in Seed st over first 47 (57) sts for right front and place these sts on a holder, bind off next 17 (19) sts for armhole; work in Seed st until there are 45 (59) sts on the right needle for back, then place these back sts on a holder; bind off next 17 (19) sts for armhole; work in Seed st to end of row – the 47 (57) sts that remain on the right hand needle are the sts for the left front.

STEP 4
Left Front

Work in Seed st pattern over the 47 (57) left front sts only, until piece measures about 8 (9) in. (20.5 (23) cm) from underarm divide.
Cut yarn and place the sts on a holder.

STEP 5
Back

Return the 45 (59) back sts from holder to needle, and join yarn to these sts.
Work in Seed st pattern until back measures same as left front.
Cut yarn and place the sts on a holder.

STEP 6
Right Front

Return the 47 (57) right front sts from holder to needle and join yarn to these sts.
Work in Seed st until right front measures same as back.

STEP 7
Hold the needle in your left hand so that the working yarn is ready for you to work the first st. Slip the sts for the back onto the other end of the needle, then slip the sts for the left front onto that same end of the needle.
Joining Row: Work in Seed st to last st of right front, knit the last st of right front together with first st of back, work in Seed st to last st of back, knit the last st of back together with first st of left front, work in Seed st to end of row – 137 (171) sts.

STEP 8
Collar

Work in Seed st for about 6 in. (15 cm) for collar.
Bind off.

FINISHING
Weave in ends.
