GAUGE:

17 sts  = about 4 in. (10 cm) with larger needles in pattern.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

STITCH EXPLANATION
K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds
Rnd 1: *K1, p1; rep from * around.
Rep Rnd 1 for K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds.

NOTES:

1. Hat is worked in the rnd on double-pointed needles beg at lower edge.
2. Color is changed to create stripes. When changing color, cut old color, leaving a long yarn tail to weave in later.
3. Our sample used almost every bit of some of the C-J colors. Since every knitter is unique, you may find that you do not have enough of one of these colors to complete the total number of rnds for that stripe. If this happens, don’t worry! One or two missing rnds will still create a super Hat. If you like, you can simply work an additional rnd (or 2) with A.

HAT
With smaller needles and A, cast on 88 sts. Divide sts onto 4 needles with 22 sts on each needle. Place marker for beg of rnd and join by knitting the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Rnds 1-9: Work in K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds.
Rnds 10-13: Change to C and continue in rib.
Change to larger needles as you work the next rnd.
Rnds 14-19: With D, knit.
Rnds 20-25: With E, knit.
Rnds 26-29: With F, purl.
Rnds 30-32: With A, knit.
Rnds 33-35: With G, knit.
Rnds 36-41: With H, knit.
Rnds 42-45: With I, purl.
Rnd 46: With J, knit.
Rnd 47: With J, *k to last 2 sts on first needle, k2tog; rep from * on 2nd, 3rd and 4th needles – 84 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnds 48-51: Rep Rnds 46 and 47 twice more – 76 sts at end of Rnd 51.
Rnds 52-57: With A, rep Rnds 46 and 47 three more times – 64 sts at end of Rnd 57.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread yarn tail through rem sts and pull to gather. Knot securely.
