The Dragon Slayer Hood

GAUGE:

16 sts + 22 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog – 1 st decreased.

PATTERN STITCHES
Seed st (multiple of 2 sts)
Row 1:
*K1, p1; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: P the knit sts and k the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for Seed st.

Seed st (multiple of 2 sts + 1)
Row 1:
K1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: K the purl sts and p the knit sts.
Rep Row 2 for Seed st.

NOTES:

1. Scarf is worked in 2 separate halves and sewed together.
2. Borders are worked as one with scarf- B borders are not the same on both halves. Work border sts with separate balls of yarn. Wind B into 2 separate balls before beginning.
3. Spike Edging is worked separately, then sewn to Scarf.


RIGHT HALF
With B, cast on 20 sts.
Row 1: With B, work Row 1 of Seed st across.
Row 2 (RS): With B, work in Seed st over first 3 sts, place marker (pm), with A, k to last st, pm, join second ball of B, k1.
Row 3: With B, k1, slip marker (sm), with A, p to marker, sm, with B, work in Seed st to end.
Keeping B sts in Seed st and A sts in Stockinette st (k on RS, p on WS) work until piece measures about 20 in. (51 cm) from beg, end with a RS row. Note: End with a RS row means that the last row you work should be a RS row, and the next row that you are ready to work will be a WS row.

Shape Hood
With B, cable cast on 10 sts as follows:
Make a slip knot on left needle. Knit 1 st through slip knot, but do not drop slip knot from left needle; transfer new st from right needle to left needle – 2 sts on left needle. *Insert right needle between first 2 sts on left needle; wrap yarn and pull through (as if knitting a st); transfer new st to left needle. Repeat from * until 10 sts have been cast on.
Row 1 (WS): With B, work in Seed st to first marker, sm, with A, p to next marker, sm, with B, work in Seed st to end – 30 sts at the end of this row.
Row 2: With B, work in Seed st to first marker, sm, with A, k to next marker, sm, with B, work in Seed st to end.
Row 3: With B, work in Seed st to first marker, sm, with A, p to next marker, with B, work in Seed st to end.
Row 4: With B, work in Seed st to first marker, sm, with A, k to marker, remove marker, with A, k to end.
Row 5: With A, p to marker, sm, with B, work in Seed st to end.
Row 6: With B, work in Seed st to marker, sm, with A, k to end.
Rows 7-15: Rep rows 5 and 6, end with a Row 5.
Decrease Row 16 (RS): With B, work in Seed st to first marker, sm, with A, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 29 sts at the end of this row.
Rows 17-19: Work even, keeping B sts in Seed st and A sts in Stockinette st.
Decrease Row 20: With B, work in Seed st to marker, sm, with A, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 28 sts.
Row 21: Work even, keeping B sts in Seed st and A sts in Stockinette st.
Rows 22-31 Rep Rows 20 and 21 - 23 sts at the end of row 30.
Decrease Row 32: With B, work in Seed st to first marker, sm, with A, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 22 sts.
Decrease Row 33 (WS): With A, p1, p2tog, p to marker, sm, with B, work in Seed st to end – 21 sts.
Rows 34-36: Rep Rows 32 and 33, ending with a Row 32 - 18 sts at the end of Row 36.
Bind off.

LEFT HALF
With B, cast on 22 sts.
Row 1: With B, work Row 1 of Seed st across.
Row 2 (RS): With B, work in Seed st over first 3 sts, pm, with A, k to last 3 sts, pm, join second ball of B and work in Seed st to end.
Row 3: With B, work in Seed st to marker, sm, with A, p to marker, sm, with B, work in Seed st to end.

Rows 23-31: Rep Rows 21 and 22, ending with a Row 21 – 23 sts at the end of Row 31.
Decrease Row 32: With B, work in Seed st to marker, sm, with A, p to last 3 sts, p2tog, p1 – 22 sts.
Decrease Row 33: Rep Row 17 – 21 sts.
Rows 34-36: Rep Rows 32 and 33, ending with a Row 32 - 18 sts when all decreases have been completed.
Bind off.

SPIKE EDGING
With B, cast on 1 st.
Row 1: Kfb – 2 sts.
Row 2: Kfb, k1 – 3 sts.
Row 3: K1, p1, kfb – 4 sts.
Row 4: Kfb, k1, p1, k1 – 5 sts.
Row 5: (K1, p1) twice, kfb – 6 sts.
Row 6: Kfb, (k1, p1) twice, k1 – 7 sts.
Row 7: (K1, p1) 3 times, kfb – 8 sts.
Row 8: Kfb, (k1, p1) 3 times, k1 – 9 sts.
Row 9: (K1, p1) 4 times, k1.
Row 10: P2tog, (k1, p1) 3 times, k1 – 8 sts.
Row 11: (K1, p1) 3 times, k2tog – 7 sts.
Row 12: P2tog, (k1, p1) twice, k1 – 6 sts.
Row 13: (K1, p1) twice, k2tog – 5 sts.
Row 14: P2tog, k1, p1, k1 – 4 sts.
Row 15: K1, p1, k2tog – 3 sts.
Row 16: P2tog, k1 – 2 sts.
Row 17: K2.
Rep Rows 2-17 until you have made 16 spikes. Bind off.
Make a second spike edging with 3 spikes.

FINISHING
With RS of Right Half facing beginning just after Seed st edging, sew Spike Edging along curved edge of hood and along side of Scarf and across short end of Scarf.
With RS tog, sew Right and Left Halves of hood tog. Sew shorter Spike Edging across the opposite short end of Scarf.
Weave in ends.
