Lion Brand« Unique

GAUGE:

11 sts + 16 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS rows, p on WS rows).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.
Yo (yarn over)
An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:
1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates the new st. You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.

NOTES:

1. Shawl is worked from center top to lower edge and shaped by increasing sts on every RS row.
2. Shawl is worked back and forth in rows. A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts.
3. When you see '- 12 sts' in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.
4. Take note that while the majority of the WS rows are worked same as Row 3, there are a few WS rows that are exceptions. Read through the pattern carefully before beginning.

Half Circle Shawl Reviewed by Marty Fenner on 2014-04-13 *****
I just finished making a prayer shawl using this pattern and I absolutely loved it as did everyone who saw it. However, using markers, counting and constantly reviewing the pattern is a MUST! I found I had to knit this one ONLY at home as it takes much concentration! But this is going to be my new prayer shawl pattern!
