Simply Elegant Bolero

GAUGE:

20 sts + 26 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

STITCH EXPLANATION:

ssk (slip, slip, knit)  Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1. Bolero is worked in one piece, back and forth in rows on circular needle, beginning at neck. Circular needle is used to accommodate large number of sts. Sleeves are worked in the round on shorter circular needle.
2. When you see ‘– 12 sts’ in the instructions, this lets you know how many sts you will have at the end of that specific row.



BOLERO
With longer circular needle, cast on 102 (110, 110, 118, 118, 126) sts.
Work in Garter st (knit every row) for 3 rows.
Buttonhole Row (WS): K3, yo, k2tog, k to end of row.
Knit 1 row.
Set-up Row (WS): K17 (19, 19, 21, 21, 23) for right front, place marker (pm), k2, pm for raglan seam, k14 for sleeve, pm, k2, pm for raglan seam, k32 (36, 36, 40, 40, 44) for back, pm, k2, pm for raglan seam, k14 for sleeve, pm, k2, pm for raglan seam, k17 (19, 19, 21, 21, 23) for left front.
Inc Row: *K to next marker, yo, slip marker (sm), k2, sm, yo; rep from * 3 more times, knit to end of row – 110 (118, 118, 126, 126, 134) sts; 18 (20, 20, 22, 22, 24) sts for each front, 16 sts for each sleeve, 34 (38, 38, 42, 42, 46) sts for back, and 2 sts at each of 4 raglan seams.
Next Row: K5, *p to marker, sm, k2, sm; rep from * 3 more times, purl to last 5 sts, k5.
Rep last 2 rows for 25 (27, 28, 30, 31, 34) more times, removing markers on last row – 310 (334, 342, 366, 374, 406) sts on last row worked; 43 (47, 48, 52, 53, 58) sts for each front, 66 (70, 72, 76, 78, 84) sts for each sleeve, 84 (92, 94, 102, 104, 114) sts for back, and 2 sts at each of 4 raglan seams.

Divide for Body and Sleeves
Note:
Remove stitch markers on next row.
Dividing Row (RS): K44 (48, 49, 53, 54, 59) for left front, slip next 68 (72, 74, 78, 80, 86) sts to a st holder for first sleeve, cast on 14 (15, 23, 25, 33, 33) sts, k86 (94, 96, 104, 106, 116) for back, slip next 68 (72, 74, 78, 80, 86) sts to a st holder for second sleeve, cast on 14 (16, 23, 25, 33, 33) sts, k44 (48, 49, 53, 54, 59) for right front – 202 (220, 240, 260, 280, 300) sts.
Next Row (WS): K5, p to last 5 sts, k5.
Keeping first and last 5 sts in Garter st and rem sts in St st (k on RS, p on WS), work until piece measures 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm) from Dividing Row, end with RS row.
Set-up Row (WS): K5, p46 (50, 57, 61, 66, 71), pm, p100 (110, 116, 128, 138, 148), pm, p46 (50, 57, 61, 66, 71), k5.
Dec Row (RS): K to 2 sts before marker, ssk, k2tog; rep from * once more, k to end of row – 198 (216, 236, 256, 276, 296) sts.
Keeping first and last 5 sts in Garter st and rem sts in St st, work even without decreasing for 5 rows.
Rep Dec row – 194 (212, 232, 252, 272, 292) sts.
Keeping first and last 5 sts in Garter st and rem sts in St st, work for 4 rows.
Knit 5 rows for Garter st edging.
Bind off.

SLEEVE
With RS facing and smaller circular needle, cast on 7 (7, 11, 12, 16, 16) sts, k68 (72, 74, 78, 80, 86) sts from one st holder, cast on 7 (8, 12, 13, 17, 17) sts – 82 (88, 97, 103, 113, 119) sts. Join to work in rnd, being careful not to twist, pm for beg of rnd.
Knit 8 rnds.
Dec Rnd: K2tog, knit to last 2 sts, ssk – 80 (86, 95, 101, 111, 117) sts.
Knit 1 rnd.
Rep last 2 rnds twice – 76 (82, 91, 97, 107, 113) sts.
Next Rnd: Rep Dec Rnd – 74 (80, 89, 95, 105, 111) sts.
Purl 1 rnd.
Rep last 2 rnds twice more – 70 (76, 85, 91, 101, 107) sts when all decreases have been completed.
Bind off.
Rep for second sleeve.

FINISHING
Sew underarm seams. Sew button opposite buttonhole.
Weave in ends.
