GAUGE:

One Square = about 9 x 9 in. (23 x 23 cm).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

1. Afghan is made from 35 Squares that are sewed together following the Assembly Diagram. Border is worked around the outside edge of the Afghan.
2. Squares are worked in joined rnds with RS facing. Use 2 separate balls of each color to work Rnds 3-5. Before beginning, wind C, D, E, F and G into 2 separate balls each.
3. To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops. Do not fasten off old color. Carry color not in use across wrong side until next needed.

Artfully Askew Afghan Reviewed by Barbara Daniels on 2014-03-05 ****
This is a fairly easy pattern, but I need to recommend a correction: According to the picture, there is an additional row per square that is not portrayed in the pattern. Rounds 3-6, not 3-5, should follow the similar color changing patterns, with round 7 being the single crochet border...there needs to be an additional row of the double crochet color changes. I created each square with the Great Smoky Mountains as the main color and used multiple other colors, one per square, for the swirl. I like the artsy look.
