GAUGE:
16 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) over Garter st (k every row). 20 sts + 36 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) over pattern st.
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st - 1 st increased.
PATTERN STITCH Slip St Pattern (multiple of 6 sts + 5 additional sts) Row 1 (RS): With first color, k1, *sl 1 wyib, k1, sl 1 wyib, k3; rep from * to last 4 sts, (sl1 wyib, k1) twice. Row 2: With first color, k1, *sl 1 wyif, k1, sl 1 wyif, p3; rep from * to last 4 sts, (sl 1 wyif, k1) twice. Row 3: With 2nd color, k4, *sl 1 wyib, k1, sl 1 wyib, k3; rep from * to last 7 sts, sl 1 wyib, k1, sl 1 wyib, k4. Row 4: With 2nd color, k1, *p3, sl 1 wyif, k1, sl 1 wyif; rep from * to last 4 sts, p3, k1. Rep Rows 1-4 for Slip St pattern.
NOTES:
1. Afghan is worked in a Slip st color pattern, back and forth in rows on circular needle. 2. Each row is worked with just one color. The color pattern is formed by working sts with the current color and slipping sts of the previous color. The color is changed on every other row. Carry color not in use up side edge of piece until instructed to cut yarn. 3. When working RS rows, sl sts as if to purl and with yarn at back of work (wyib). When working WS rows, sl sts as if to purl and with yarn at front of work (wyif). Front and back refer to the side of the piece that faces you as you work that row. 4. Top and bottom borders are worked in one piece with Afghan. Sts for side borders are picked up after Afghan has been completed. 5. Sts are increased after working bottom border and decreased before working top border to accommodate the st gauge.
AFGHAN Border With A, cast on 144 sts. Working back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles, work in Garter st (k every row) for 13 rows. Next (Increase) Row (WS): *K3, kfb; rep from * to last 4 sts, k4 - 179 sts at the end of this row.
Begin Slip St Pattern Rows 1-24: Work in Slip St pattern, with B as first color and A as second color. Rows 25-32: Work in Slip St pattern for 8 rows, with C as first color and A as second color. Rows 33-40: Work in Slip St pattern for 8 rows, with B as first color and C as second color. Rows 41-44: Work in Slip St pattern for 4 rows, with B as first color and A as second color. Rows 45-52: Rep Rows 25-32. Cut C. Rows 53-76: Rep Rows 1-24. Rows 77-84: Work in Slip St pattern for 8 rows, with D as first color and A as second color. Rows 85-92: Work in Slip St pattern for 8 rows, with B as first color and D as second color. Rows 93-96: Work in Slip St pattern for 4 rows, with B as first color and A as second color. Row 97-104: Rep Rows 77-84. Cut D. Rows 105-128: Rep Rows 1-24. Rows 129-136: Work in Slip St pattern for 8 rows, with E as first color and A as second color. Rows 137-144: Work in Slip St pattern for 8 rows, with B as first color and E as second color. Rows 145-148: Work in Slip St pattern for 4 rows, with B as first color and A as second color. Row 149-156: Rep Rows 129-136. Cut E. Rows 157-180: Rep Rows 1-24. Rows 181-188: Work in Slip St pattern for 8 rows, with F as first color and A as second color. Rows 189-196: Work in Slip St pattern for 8 rows, with B as first color and F as second color. Rows 197-200: Work in Slip St pattern for 4 rows, with B as first color and A as second color. Rows 201-208: Rep Rows 181-188. Cut F. Rows 209-416: Rep Rows 1-208. Rows 417-440: Rep Rows 1-24. Cut B.
Border With A, knit 1 row. Next (Decrease) Row: *K3, k2tog; rep from * to last 4 sts, k4 - 144 sts at the end of this row. Work in Garter st for 13 rows. Bind off.
FINISHING Side Borders With RS facing and A, pick up and k210 sts evenly spaced across one side edge of Afghan. Note: To pick up sts evenly spaced along side edge, first divide the edge into equal segments. Use clips or scrap yarn to mark the segments. Divide the side edge of the Afghan into 10 equal size segments, then pick up and k 21 sts in each segment. Work in Garter st for 14 rows. Bind off. Rep across opposite side edge. Weave in ends.

I made this for my father-in-law for Christmas. The colors aren't as muted as the picture, they are more of a 1970ish brown/gold/olive. But it was manly for him. It looked like a soft sweater and was fun and easy to knit. Dad enjoyed it.
