16 sts + 16 rows = 4 in. in Arrow Lace pattern.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

sl2kp (slip 2-k1-pass slipped sts over)

A double decrease worked as follows:
1. Insert right needle into next 2 sts as if to knit them tog, and slip them from the left needle to the right needle.
2. Knit the next st.
3. With tip of left needle, lift the 2 slipped sts (the 2nd and 3rd sts on the right needle) up and over the knit st (first st on right needle) and off the needle – you have decreased 2 sts.
ssk (slip, slip, knit)
Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog – 1 st decreased. yo (yarn over)
An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows:
1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles.
2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates the new st. You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.

Arrow Lace (worked over a multiple of 6 sts + 1 additional st)
Row 1:
Row 2 (RS): K1, *yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k1; rep from * to end of row.
Row 3: Purl.
Row 4: K2, yo, sl2kp, yo, *k3, yo, sl2kp, yo; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Rep Rows 1-4 for Arrow Lace pattern.

1. Ruanna is worked in 3 pieces; 2 long Lace Panels and 1 short Garter Panel.
2. The Lace Panels are worked in Arrow Lace pattern with first and last 3 sts of each row worked in Garter st (k every row) for Garter st borders. Stitch markers are used to separate the border sts and the center Arrow Lace pattern sts.
3. The Arrow Lace pattern can be worked from written instructions or by following the Chart. If working from the chart, read from right to left on RS rows and from left to right on WS rows.
4. In this design, large needles are used to create a lacy effect. 5. The Panels are sewn together at side edges, with the Garter Panel between the 2 Lace Panels.
6. Study your work after completing a few Garter st rows so that you can recognize the Garter ridges – each ridge = 2 rows of Garter st.
7. The wonderful thing about this Ruanna is that after the first Panel is completed, it can be worn on its own until you finish the other 2 Panels and sew them all together!

LACE PANEL (make 2)
Cast on 73 sts.
Work in Garter st (k every row) for 12 rows.
Row 1 (WS): K3 (for Garter st border), place marker (pm), work Row 1 of Arrow Lace pattern over next 67 sts, pm, k last 3 sts (for Garter st border).
Row 2: K3, slip marker (sm), work Row 2 of Arrow Lace pattern to next marker, sm, k3.
Row 3: K3, sm, work Row 3 of Arrow Lace pattern to next marker, sm, k3.
Row 4: K3, sm, work Row 4 of Arrow Lace pattern to next marker, sm, k3.
Rep Rows 1-4 until you have worked a total of 240 rows. You will have worked the 4 row rep a total of 60 times.
Work in Garter st for 12 rows.
Bind off.

Cast on 23 sts.
Work in Garter st for 124 rows (62 Garter ridges).
Bind off.

Following photo and assembly diagram, with RS facing, arrange Panels in the following order: Lace Panel, Garter Panel, Lace Panel.

On inside edge of each Lace Panel, beg at cast-on edge, count up ridges of Garter st border and place a marker on the 62nd ridge (Row 124). Sew long sides of Garter Panel to long side of each Lace Panel, from cast-on edge to marker.
Weave in ends.

Knit Spring Ruana Reviewed by Melanie Haniph on 2014-09-15 ****
This was a fun, yet time-consuming project to knit. I had only a half-hour a day to do it (and maybe an hour or 2 on weekends), and so it took me several months to complete. I had never done a lace pattern before, and this was a great introduction. The bamboo cotton yarn is so lovely and soft. My completed ruana came out just like the featured photo of the piece.
