Additional Materials
Fiberfill stuffing
Small amount of black yarn for mouth and nose
Scrap of black felt (optional, see Important Materials Note below)
2 black buttons for eyes, 1 in. (25 mm) diameter

IMPORTANT MATERIALS NOTE
You may wish to substitute felt circles for the button eyes. If you choose to use buttons, please be aware that buttons can be a choking hazard.
 

Toddler Monkey Hat

GAUGE:

Exact gauge is not essential to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit in front and back) Knit next st without removing it from left needle, then k through back of same st – 1 st increased.
skp Slip 1 as if to knit, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch – 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1.Hat is worked back and forth in rows beginning at lower edge, then seamed. Crown (top of Hat) is shaped with decreases.
2.Muzzle, Ears, and Earflaps are worked separately and sewed to Hat.



HAT
With A, cast on 79 sts.

Seed St Band
Row 1: *P1, k1; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2-6: Rep Row 1.
Row 7: *P1, k1; rep from * to last 2 sts, p1, kfb – 80 sts.

Beg with a RS (knit) row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 22 rows.
Note: The last row you work will be a WS (purl) row.

Shape Crown (Top of Hat)
Row 1 (RS): *Skp, k12, k2tog; rep from * to end of row – 70 sts at the end of this row.
Row 2: Purl.
Row 3: *Skp, k10, k2tog; rep from * to end of row – 60 sts.
Row 4: Purl.
Row 5: *Skp, k8, k2tog; rep from * to end of row – 50 sts.
Row 6: Purl.
Row 7: *Skp, k6, k2tog; rep from * to end of row – 40 sts.
Row 8: Purl.
Row 9: *Skp, k4, k2tog; rep from * to end of row – 30 sts.
Row 10: Purl.
Row 11: *Skp, k2, k2tog; rep from * to end of row – 20 sts.
Row 12: Purl.
Row 13: *Skp, k2tog; rep from * to end of row – 10 sts.
Row 14: *P2tog; rep from * to end of row – 5 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through rem sts and pull to gather. Knot securely. Use rem tail to sew side edges tog for seam.

MUZZLE
With B, cast on 36 sts.
Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Row 2: *Skp, k14, k2tog; rep from * to end of row – 32 sts at the end of this row.
Row 3: Purl.
Row 4: *Skp, k12, k2tog; rep from * to end of row – 28 sts.
Row 5: Purl.
Row 6: *Skp, k10, k2tog; rep from * to end of row – 24 sts.
Row 7: Purl.
Row 8: *K2tog; rep from * to end of row – 12 sts.
Row 9: *P2tog; rep from * to end of row – 6 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through rem sts and pull to gather. Knot securely. Use rem tail to sew side edges tog.

EARS (make 2)
With A, cast on 24 sts.
Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Row 2: *Kfb, k1; rep from * across – 36 sts at the end of this row.
Beg with a WS (purl) row, work in St st for 11 rows. Note: The last row you work will be a WS (purl) row.
Row 14 (RS): *K2tog, k4; rep from * to end of row – 30 sts.
Row 15: Purl.
Row 16: *K2tog, k3; rep from * to end of row – 24 sts.
Row 17: Purl.
Row 18: *K2tog; rep from * to end of row – 12 sts.
Row 19: *P2tog; rep from * to end of row – 6 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through rem sts and pull to gather. Knot securely. Use rem tail to sew side edges tog.

EAR FLAPS (make 2)
With A, cast on 15 sts.
Rows 1–10: Sl 1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end of row.
Row 11 (WS): P2tog, *k1, p1; rep from * to last st, k1 – 14 sts at the end of this row.
Row 12: P2tog, *k1, p1; rep from * to end of row – 13 sts.
Row 13: Skp, *p1, k1; rep from * to last st, p1 – 12 sts.
Row 14: Skp, *p1, k1; rep from * to end of row – 11 sts.
Rows 15 and 16: Rep Rows 11 and 12 – 9 sts at the end of Row 16.
Row 17: Skp, *p1, k1; rep from * to last 3 sts, p1, k2tog – 7 sts.
Bind off.

FINISHING
Stuff Muzzle lightly and sew to center of Hat. With black yarn, embroider nostrils and a straight st mouth on Muzzle. With black yarn, sew buttons or felt circles to Hat, above Muzzle, for eyes. Sew Ears to top of Hat. Sew one Earflap to each side of Hat.

Braided Ties (make 2)
Cut 4 strands of A, each 30 in. (76 cm) long. Draw strands through lower point of one Earflap. Cut a 15 in. (38 cm) length of A and knot to Earflap at same point that strands are drawn through. Divide strands into 3 groups of 3 strands each and braid tog. Knot then trim ends. Rep on other Earflap.
Weave in ends.

This hat was super easy to make! I ommitted the ear flaps.. and sewed crochet eyes on... Super cute!
