GAUGE:
21 sts + 30 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS), with larger needles. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION:
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased. ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.

STRIPE PATTERN
Working in St st, *work 4 rows with B, 1 row with A, 5 rows with B, (2 rows with A, 2 rows with B) twice, 1 row with A, 2 rows with B, 3 rows with A, 1 row with B, 2 rows with A; rep from * for Stripe Pattern.
NOTES:
1. Vest is made in three pieces: Back, Left Front, and Right Front, beg at lower edge.
2. The lower sections of the Back and Fronts are worked with A only.
3. The top sections of the Back and Fronts are worked changing color as directed in the Stripe Pattern.
4. Back neck edging is worked, as part of the Back, folded to the WS and sewn in place.
5. When you see 'work even' in the instructions, this means to continue in the pattern st you have established without changing the st count by increasing, decreasing, or binding off.
