21 sts + 48 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Garter st (knit every row). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

M1 (make 1 st) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Work this new stitch through the back loop.

BOOTIE (make 2)
With larger needles, cast on 27 sts.
Row 1 (WS): K 13, place marker, k 1, place marker, knit to end.
Row 2 (RS): K 1, M1, knit to marker, M1, slip marker, k 1, slip marker, M1, knit to last st, M1, k 1 - 31 sts.
Repeat last row 2 more times - 39 sts.
Work 11 rows in Garter st, removing markers on first row.
Next Row (RS): K 16, k2tog, place marker, k 3, place marker, k2tog, k 16 - 37 sts.
Next Row (WS): Knit to 2 sts before marker, k2tog, k 3, k2tog, knit to end - 35 sts.
Repeat last row 4 more times - 27 sts.
Knit 2 rows.
Change to smaller needles and work in K1, P1 Rib for 3 in. (7.5 cm). Bind off loosely in Rib. Cut yarn leaving a 20 in. (51 cm) tail.

Thread yarn tail through large-eyed needle and sew sides of ribbing tog. Continue sewing along rem sides of Garter st portion of Bootie and across open end to close toe.
Weave in ends.

I've made 3 pairs of these so far! Very quick and very cute! I think this last pair took me 2 hours per bootie, so 4 hours total. I'm not sure how they fit, if they fit newborns or not. I'll ask my sister in law when my nephew is born (as this last pair is for my little nephew due in 20 days).
