18 sts = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

K2, p2 Rib (worked in the rnd, multiple of 4 sts)
Rnd 1:
*K2, p2; rep from * around.
Rep Rnd 1 for K2, p2 Rib.

Cast on 228 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Work in K2, p2 Rib for 5 rnds.
Change to St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd), and work until piece measures about 15 1/4 in. (39 cm) from beg.
Work in K2, p2 Rib for 5 rnds.
Bind off.

Weave in ends.

Maxi Stockinette Cowl Reviewed by Cheryl Hayes on 2011-11-19 *****
I have been looking for a pattern for a cowl neck scarf that I can double over and use as a hood too and I think I found it! I'm a little intimidated by casting on 228 stitches on circular needles, which I've never used before, but I'll give it a try. I'm also using different yarn from what the pattern calls for so I hope all goes well! I read somewhere that when using circular needles, it's important to use the right LENGTH circular needles. If they are too short your project will slip off and too long your project will stretch. That's different from straight needles. Happy knitting to all!!
