Felted Roll-Up Pencil Case

Lion Brand® Fishermen's Wool® - Vanna's Choice®

GAUGE:

Exact gauge is not essential to this project.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

kfb (knit into front and then back)
An increase worked as follows:
1. Knit the next st through the front loop, but do not remove the st from your left hand needle.
2. Knit the same st once more, this time inserting your needle through the back loop of the st. You will have created 2 loops (sts) on your right hand needle.
3. Drop the st from your left hand needle - 1 st increased.

NOTES:

Due to the nature of the felting process, the size of your finished pieces can vary.

PENCIL CASE
With larger needles and A, cast on 50 sts.
Work in Garter st (k every row) for 75 rows for back of Case.
Place a marker at beg and end of last row for fold line.
Change to B.
Work in Garter st for 45 rows for front pocket.
Bind off.

LEAVES (make 4)
With smaller needles and C, cast on 4 sts.
Row 1: Purl.
Row 2 (RS): K1, (kfb) twice, k1 - 6 sts at the end of this row.
Row 3: Purl.
Row 4: K2, (kfb) twice, k2 - 8 sts at the end of this row.
Rows 5-9: Beg with a WS (purl) row work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 5 rows.
Row 10: K2tog, k to last 2 sts, k2tog - 6 sts at the end of this row.
Row 11: Purl.
Row 12: Rep Row 10 - 4 sts at the end of this row.
Row 13: Purl.
Row 14: (K2tog) twice - 2 sts at the end of this row.
Row 15: P2tog - 1 st at the end of this row.
Fasten off.

FINISHING
Fold Pencil Case along fold line and seam sides of pocket to back of Case. Place 7 pins or markers evenly spaced across lower edge of pocket, dividing it into 8 equal-size sections. With A and sewing through both thicknesses, sew running sts from each marker up to upper edge of pocket to form 8 sections.
Felt
Wash by machine on a hot wash/cold rinse cycle with detergent and several pieces of clothing to agitate. Check piece carefully and remove from machine as soon as it is felted to your satisfaction. Pull into shape.

Cut 3 strands of B, each 60 in. (152.5 cm) long, for ties. Braid strands together. Knot each end. Sew center of braid to center back of Case. Sew 2 Leaves to each end of braid. Weave in ends.

Felted Roll-Up Pencil Case Reviewed by Evelyn Gonzalez on 2014-01-12 ***
I am a beginner knitter and want to try this project, but even before I begin, I don't understand the directions.

It keeps saying, "Using A (or B, or C") and I don't know what that means. They never say what A, B or C mean. Is it the different yarns? There are more than 3 yarns used, I believe.

I would appreciate any help some of the more advanced knitters could provide.

Thank you.
