Two-Color Tunisian Crochet Tote

Lion Brand® Vanna's Choice® - Vanna's Glamour®

GAUGE:

12 sts + 12 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in two-color Tunisian crochet worked in the rnd.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

1. Use double-ended hook as a single-ended crochet hook where indicated.
2. Base of Tote is worked in joined rnds with RS facing throughout. Markers are placed in the st at each end of the base to indicate where increases should be worked. Always move markers up to the center sc of the 3-sc group.

TOTE
Base

With A and using double-ended Tunisian crochet hook as a single-ended hook, ch 19.
Rnd 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across to last ch, 2 sc in last ch, place marker (pm) in last sc made, sc in same ch; rotate piece to work across opposite side of foundation ch, sc in each ch across to last ch, 2 sc in last ch, pm in last sc made; join with sl st in first sc - 38 sc at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 3 sc in first st, sc in each sc across to st before marked st, 3 sc in st before marked st, 2 sc in marked st, move marker to last sc made, sc in same st, 3 sc in next st, sc in each sc across to st before next marked st, 3 sc in st before marked st, 2 sc in marked st, move marker to last sc made, sc in same st; join with sl st in first sc - 50 sc at the end of this rnd.
Rnds 3 and 4: Rep Rnd 2 twice - 74 sc at the end of Rnd 4.
Rnds 5 and 6: Sc in each st around; join with sl st in first sc.
Body
Note:
Body of Tote is worked in two-color Tunisian crochet worked in the rnd.
Each rnd is worked in sections with 2 passes (forward pass and return pass) over each section.
The forward pass is done with color A, the return pass with color B.

First Section
Forward Pass:
With A, using one end of Tunisian crochet hook, and keeping all loops on hook, pull up a loop in BACK LOOP of 25 sts of Rnd 6.
Return Pass: Turn piece to work with opposite end of hook.
With B, yo and pull through first loop on hook, *yo and pull through 2 loops on hook; rep from * until there are 3 loops remaining on hook.
Second Section
Forward Pass:
Turn. Using A, opposite end of Tunisian crochet hook, and keeping all loops on hook, pull up a loop in next 25 sts of Rnd 6.
Return Pass: Turn work to work with opposite end of hook. Using B, yo and pull through first loop on hook, *yo and pull through 2 loops on hook; rep from * until there are 3 loops remaining on hook.
Third Section Forward Pass: Turn. Using A, opposite end of Tunisian crochet hook, and keeping all loops on hook, pull up a loop in rem sts of Rnd 6.
Return Pass:Turn work to work with opposite end of hook. Using B, yo and pull through first loop on hook, *yo and pull through 2 loops on hook; rep from * until there are 3 loops remaining on hook.

Working in sections, rep Forward and Return Passes for two-color Tunisian crochet worked in the rnd until piece measures 13 in. (33 cm) from beg and ending with a Return Pass.

Casting Off: Pull B through final loops (one loop remains on hook). Turn work to work with opposite end of hook.
With A, *pull up a loop in next st (2 loops on hook), yo and through 2 loops on hook; rep from * around. Pull yarn through final loop on hook to fasten off.

HANDLES (make 2)
With A, using double-ended Tunisian hook as a single-ended hook and leaving a long beg tail, ch 41.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 40 sc at the end of this row.
Rows 2-5: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

FINISHING
With yarn tails, sew ends of Handles to top of Tote, allowing Handles to overlap top of Tote by about 2 in. (5 cm).
Edging
Note:
Edging is worked in three sections; 1) To one side of one Handle, 2) between the Handles, and 3) to the side of the remaining Handle. In each section, the edging is worked in the rnd, along the top edge of the Tote and across the side edge(s) of the Handle(s).
From RS, with smaller standard crochet hook, join A with sl st anywhere along top edge of Tote. Ch 1, sc evenly around top opening and across side edge(s) of Handle(s); join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. Join A with sl st in top edge of next section and rep edging. Fasten off. Join A with sl st in top edge of last section and rep edging. Fasten off.
Weave in ends.

Two-Color Tunisian Crochet Tote Reviewed by Melvia Wong on 2011-07-26 *****
I chose to make it in Rust and Copper (Glamour). Came out perfect but frequently count the stitches to be sure you are picking up the correct amount on the forward pass. I also like a shoulder strap so I made the handles longer. Will make a larger one in colored hemp or raffia using a larger hook.
