GAUGE:

One Square = 12 x12 in. (30.5 x 30.5 cm). When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Granny Throw Reviewed by Joann Branson on 2012-12-29 *****
Well, I followed everyone's advice on here, and made extra squares -- my afghan was 4 x 5 squares instead of 3 x 4 squares. And my finished afghan was HUGE! It would have been plenty big with just 12 squares, as the pattern recommends. Take my advice and CHECK YOUR GAUGE and use a bigger hook if necessary. It will save you a lot of money on yarn.
