GAUGE:

32 sts of Large Cable pattern = about 5 in. (12.5 cm) .

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Boyfriend Cardigan Reviewed by Karen Burks on 2012-01-16 *****
i do not advise anyone to knit this pattern. If you want to test your patience, your knitting skills and your use of profanity, go ahead. It is a challenge. A row counter is essential with the 44 row pattern repeat. If you can work through lack of gauge, no pocket finishing instructions, trying to reverse the shapings on the right front neckline and a mistake in the sleeve increases, you'll have a beautiful sweater. I made it for a guy so had to move buttonholes to left side.
