Openwork Crocheted Cowl
Lion Brand® Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick®
GAUGE:
6 single crochet = about 4 in. (10 cm).
EXACT GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR THIS PROJECT. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
COWL
Chain 37. Being careful not to twist the chain, join the end of the chain to the beginning with a slip stitch to make a ring. Work in rounds, always joining last stitch of each round to the first stitch of the round with a slip stitch. Round 1: Work a single crochet in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain around. Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet), turn, work a double crochet in each stitch around. Round 3: Chain 1, turn, work a single crochet in each stitch around.
Repeat Rounds 2 and 3 until piece measures about 8 1/2 in. (21.5 cm) from beginning. Fasten off.
FINISHING
Weave in ends.

I think of this as the Helen Hunt Cowl - doesn't the model look like her?
I have made this cowl for 2 teachers, 2 Girl Scout leaders and 7 teenagers on my Christmas list with rave reviews. Easy to complete in an evening and makes a really nice gift! If you are a beginner and considering making this, go get the yarn and a big fat hook and get started! You will love the results!
