GAUGE:

15 sts + 23 rnds = 4 in. (10 cm) over St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) with B. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

HAT
With A and circular needle, cast on 60 (65, 70) sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Place marker for beg of rnd.
Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: Purl.
Repeat Rnds 1 and 2 until piece measures about 2 1/2 (2 1/2, 3) in. (6.5 (6.5, 7.5 cm)) from beg.
Knit 2 rnds.
Change to B and St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd). Work until piece measures about 5 (6, 7) in. (12.5 (15, 18 cm)) from beg.
Note: Change to double-pointed needles when there are too few sts to continue on circular needle.

Next Rnd: *K10 (11, 12), k2tog; rep from * around – 55 (60, 65) sts rem at end of this rnd.
Knit 3 (5, 5) rnds.
Next Rnd: *K9 (10, 11), k2tog; rep from * around – 50 (55, 60) sts .
Knit 3 (5, 5) rnds.
Next Rnd: *K8 (9, 10), k2tog; rep from * around – 45 (50, 55) sts.
Knit 3 (3, 5) rnds.
Next Rnd: *K7 (8, 9), k2tog; rep from * around – 40 (45, 50) sts.
Knit 3 (3, 5) rnds.
Next Rnd: *K6 (7, 8), k2tog; rep from * around – 35 (40, 45) sts.
Knit 3 (3, 5) rnds.
Next Rnd: *K5 (6, 7), k2tog, rep from * around – 30 (35, 40) sts.

All Sizes
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through rem sts and pull together tightly. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Knitted Pom Pom
With circular needle and A, cast on 15 (15, 21) sts. Working back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles, work in Garter st (k every row) until piece measures about 4 (4, 7) in. (10 (10,18 cm)) from beg. Bind off, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through edge of piece, stuff lightly with fiberfill, and pull yarn tail to gather. Tie Pompom to Hat. Weave in ends.

I knit this in the round until it got too stretched on the cable, then knit flat and sewed up to the tip. For the pom pom, I cast on the recommended number of stitches, worked in garter stitch, making a square. With a needle, picked up stitches in a circle, gathered, tucked in the corners and stuffed with fiberfill. Very easy pattern. I plan to make a newborn size with the leftover yarn.
