14 sts + 20 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS).

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Seed Stitch (over an even number of sts)
Row 1 (RS):
*K1, p1; rep from * across.
Row 2: P the knit sts and k the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for Seed st.

1) Circular needle is used to accommodate large number of sts. Work back and forth on circular needle as if working on straight needles.
2) To keep Collar folded down, button Capelet through both buttonholes.

Cast on 160 sts.
Work in Seed St until piece measures 2 1/2 in. (6.5 cm) from beg.
Beg with a k row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS) for 4 rows.
Next Row: (K18, k2tog) across.
Work even in St st for 3 rows.
Next Row: (k17, k2tog) across.
Continue working as established, working in St st and dec 8 sts every 4 rows, until only 8 sts remain. Bind off.
With RS facing, beg at top right corner, pick up and k 100 sts evenly spaced along straight edge of Body.
Rows 1-5: Work in Seed st.
Row 6 (buttonhole row): Work 4 sts in Seed st, k2tog, yo, work even in Seed st to end.
Rows 7-13: Work in Seed st.
Row 14 (buttonhole row): Rep Row 6.
Rows 15-20: Work in Seed St. Bind off.

Fold Collar in half, so that last buttonhole is directly over the first. Sew button opposite buttonhole. Weave in ends.

Library Capelet Reviewed by Artemis Louloudias on 2015-03-31 ****
I finished the capelet and I want to add that I believe the gauge is way off for the suggested needle size. If you want an accurate gauge, I suggest using smaller needles than 6mm. Sth like 4 or 4.5mm. This would explain some of the reviews stating that the capelet was small. I followed the pattern with the suggested yarn and 6mm needles and I am happy with the outcome. The size is perfect. I would definitely knit this pattern again.
