GAUGE:

25 sts + 30 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Stockinette st (k on right side, p on wrong side). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

SCARF
Cast on 34 sts,
Knit 3 rows.
Rows 1 and 2: K2, *k3, p3; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 3: K2, p1, *k3, p3; rep from * to last 7 sts, k3, p2, k2.
Row 4: K4, *p3, k3; rep from * to last 6 sts, p3, k3.
Row 5: K2, p2, *k3, p3; rep from * to last 6 sts, k3, p1, k2.
Row 6: K3, *p3, k3; rep from * to last 7 sts, p3, k4.
Rows 7 and 8: K2, *p3, k3; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 9: Rep Row 6.
Row 10: Rep Row 5.
Row 11: Rep Row 4.
Row 12: Rep Row 3.
Rows 13 and 14: Rep Row 1.
Rows 15 and 16: Rep Rows 11 and 12.
Rows 17 and 18: Rep Rows 9 and 10.

For an easy to knit scarf this certainly looks impressive and I felt very accomplished. To make the pattern easy to follow, I used Word to type up each row as it should be knitted in a large,easier to read font. I used a large paper clip to hold a stiff 1/2 inch length of paper beneath the row to be worked to avoid confusion. Just slide the clip down as you progress. I do this with similar patterns I like and will use often. I also made an "Ellen's Ship" hat in matching yarn to make a set.
