GAUGE:

Motif I= 7 in. [17.5 cm] diameter. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

  • dc2tog (dc dec) Yo, insert hook in st and draw up a lp, yo and draw through 2 lps. Yo, insert hook in next st and draw up a lp. Yo, draw through 2 lps, yo and draw through all lps on hook.
  • dc3tog (dc dec) Yo, insert hook in st and draw up a lp, yo and draw through 2 lps. (Yo, insert hook in next st and draw up a lp. Yo, draw through 2 lps) twice, yo and draw through all lps on hook.
  • tr4tog [Yo twice, insert hook in next st and draw up a lp, (yo and draw through 2 lps) twice] 4 times, yo and draw through all lps on hook.
  • tr5tog [yo twice, insert hook in next st and draw up a lp, (yo and draw through 2 lps) twice] 5 times, yo and draw through all lps on hook.
  • tr6tog [Yo twice, insert hook in next st and draw up a lp, (yo and draw through 2 lps) twice] 6 times, yo and draw through all lps on hook.

MOTIF I Octagon Star (make 5)
With A, ch 6, sl st in beg ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 15 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc) around, join with sl st in top of beg ch – 24 dc.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in next dc around, join with sl st in top of beg ch – 48 dc.
Rnd 4: Ch 4 (counts as tr), tr5tog, (ch 13, tr6tog) around, ch 13, join with sl st in top of beg ch – 8 ch-13 sp.
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in same st, [sc in beg 6 ch of next ch-13 sp, 3 sc in next ch, sc in next 6 ch *, sc in next st] around, end last rep at *, join with sl st in top of beg sc.
Rnd 6: Ch 1, sk beg sc, (sc in next 7 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc, * sk 1 sc) around, end last rep at *, join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 7: Ch 1, sk beg sc, (sc in next 7 sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc, * sk 2 sc) around, end last rep at *, sk 1 sc, join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 8: Rep Rnd 7. Fasten off.

MOTIF II ‘Granny Stitch’ Hexagon (make 4)
With B, ch 6, sl st in beg ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, dc2tog in ring, (ch 3, dc3tog in ring) 5 times, ch 3, sl st in top of beg ch – 6 ch-3 sp.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, (dc2tog, ch 3, dc3tog) in next ch-3 sp, [ch 3, (dc3tog, ch 3, dc3tog) in next ch-3 sp] 5 times, ch 3, sl st in top of begch – 12 ch-3 sp.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc2tog in next ch-3 sp, [ch 3, (dc3tog, ch 3, dc3tog) in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, * dc3tog in next ch-3 sp] around, end last rep at *, sl st in top of beg ch – 18 ch-3 sp.
Rnd 4: Sl st in beg ch-3 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-3 sp, [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp, * (3 dc in next ch-3 sp) twice] around, end last rep at *, 3 dc in last ch-3 sp, sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in same sp, sc in each dc and work 2 sc in each ch-2 sp around, join with sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.

MOTIF III Circle-in-the-Square (make 6)
With C, ch 8, sl st in beg ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 15 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3 – 16 dc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 3 dc, ch 3, (sc in next 4 dc, ch 3) 3 times, join with sl st in beg sc – 4 ch-3 sps.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 3 sc, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in next ch-3 sp, [sc in next 4 sc, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in next
ch-3 sp] around, join with sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.

MOTIF IV Octagon (make 4)
With D, ch 5, sl st in beg ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 15 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of beg ch – 16 dc.
Rnd 2:
Ch 3, 2 dc in same st, dc in next dc, (3 dc in next dc, dc in next dc) around, join with sl st in top of beg ch – 32 dc.
Rnd 3: Ch 3, (3 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc) around, end last repeat (3 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc), join with sl st in top of beg ch – 48 dc.
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in next dc, (3 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc) around, end last repeat (3 dc in next dc, dc in next dc), join with sl st in top of beg ch – 72 dc. Fasten off.

MOTIF V Six-Petal Flower Motif (make 6)
With E, ch 8, sl st in beg ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in ring, (ch 6, 3 dc in ring) 5 times, ch 6, dc in ring, join with sl st in top of beg ch – 6 ch-6 sp.
Rnd 2: [ch 1, sk 1 dc, (sc, hdc, 7 dc, hdc, sc) in next ch-6 sp, ch 1, sk 1 dc, sl st in next dc] around – 6 petals. Fasten off.

MOTIF VI Flower-Center Circular Motif (make 1 in D and 1 in E)
Ch 8, sl st in beg ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 9 (counts as tr and ch 5), (tr, ch 5) 7 times, join with sl st in 4th ch of beg ch-9 – 8 ch-5 sp.
Rnd 2: Sl st in next ch-5 sp, ch 4 (counts as tr), 6 tr in same ch-5 sp, (7 tr in next 7 ch-5 sp) around, join with sl st in top of beg ch – 56 tr.
Rnd 3: Ch 4, tr in next 6 tr, ch 5, (tr in next 7 tr, ch 5) around, join with sl st in top of beg ch.
Rnd 4: Sl st in next tr, ch 4, tr4tog, (ch 6, sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 6, sk 1 tr, tr5tog, ch 6, sk 1 tr, sc in next ch-5 sp) 7 times, ch 3, dc in top of beg cluster.
