GAUGE:

8 sts + 8 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] in (sc, ch 1) pattern using 1 strand each of A, B, C, and D held together. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Speed Hook Earflap Hat and Scarf Set Reviewed by esther felberbaum on 2009-11-17 ****
While his hat is the cutest I've ever made, the pattern needs some serious fixing. I just finished making it for my 2 year old using only 3 strands of yarn and a P hook, and it is still too big. I probably should've made her the infant size, or used an even smaller hook, like an N.
