I have followed the pattern purchased, South Shore Aura Blanket. I think. I have used one cake of the kit yarn, Ch 95 with a 6 mm hook to avoid curling & switched to a 5.5 hook to begin the pattern. The size is supposed to be 45 x 48 in. Obviously, it will not be. Is there a typo in how many to chain? I'm a beginner+. My error in not measuring earlier. One cake equals 12 in. length. 27.5 in. width. not the expected 45 in. I'm so disappointed.
Hi Rebecca - it looks like your gauge is tighter than the pattern gauge. After blocking/washing you should be getting 9 staggered half double crochets over 4.25', which will give you a width of about 45'. It's hard to say for sure based on these pictures, but it looks like you're getting more like 13 sts in 4.25'? When your gauge is smaller than expected like this you should go up a hook size or two, so we suggest trying a 7mm or 8mm hook, and making sure that you block the swatch before measuring.
I have to agree with the other reviewer, there is no way the number of starting chains in the pattern is going to get anywhere near 45". Trying to do the recommended number of chains got somewhere close to 30" of width with a 6mm hook; when I decided to start over and chain until I reached 45" in length it took 60+ chain stitches over what the pattern called for originally so it's not a matter of gauge/tension being incorrect. At the full size claimed by the kit/pattern it seems doubtful that 6 cakes of the yarn are going to be enough to reach 48" long, too.
Hello Michael - our apologies if you're having trouble matching the finished dimensions in this blanket! The measurements are taken from the original sample, so it's important that you're able to match the blocked gauge given in the pattern. If you were able to do that and are still coming up short on the dimensions please email us at [email protected] so we can see what might be happening.
