GAUGE:

EXACT GAUGE IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR THIS PROJECT BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

sc2tog (sc decrease) Insert hook into st and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next st and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

PUPPET
With A, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in first ch; place marker to indicate beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around – 12 sc.
Rnd 3: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc; rep from * around – 18 sc.
Rnd 4: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 2 sc; rep from * around – 24 sc.
Rnds 5–9: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 10: *Sc2tog, sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around – 18 sts. Change to B.
Rnd 11: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 12: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around – 22 sts.
Rnd 13: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around – 26 sts.
Rnd 14: *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around – 30 sts.
Rnds 15–25: Sc in each sc around.
Fasten off.

Ears (make 2)
With A, ch 2.
Work 6 sc in first ch.
Fasten off.

Arms (make 2)
With A, ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 8 sc in first ch; place marker to indicate beg of rnd; move marker up as each rnd is completed.
Rnds 2–3: Sc in each sc around.
Rnds 4–8: Change to B. Sc in each sc around.
Fasten off.

Shirt
With C, ch 7.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 6 sts.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc2 tog, sc in each of next 2 sts, sc2tog – 4 sts.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc2 tog, sc2tog – 2 sts.
Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc2 tog – 1 st.
Fasten off.

Collar
With C, ch 21.
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across- 20 sts.
Fasten off.

Tie
With red yarn, ch 7.
Fasten off.

FINISHING
Fold ears to form semi-circles and sew to head. With C, embroider long straight sts for hair. With B, embroider French knots for eyes, and with pink, embroider a straight st smile. Sew shirt onto front of puppet.
Wrap collar over shirt and around neck and sew in place. Sew tie to middle of collar.
Weave in ends.

As a pattern it's functional regardless of political affiliation (hint-hint-Virginia) but its relevance would be more easily recognized in conjunction with the Obama finger puppet. With that said, if there was a Biden and a Palin puppet as well it would make for an interesting mix.
