GAUGE:

22 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Stockinette st worked in the round (knit every round).
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

SW (slip and wrap) Bring yarn to front, slip next st, turn, wrap yarn around slip st and slip same st back onto right hand needle. On next row, work wrapped st by picking up wrap and working together with st on left hand needle.

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog.

K1, p1 Rib (even number of sts)
Round 1: *K1, p1; rep from * to end.
Repeat Round 1 for Rib pattern

Grafting Hold 2 needles parallel with WS of work together. Thread a large-eyed blunt needle with yarn end and work as follows: Insert needle as if to purl into first stitch on front piece. Insert needle as if to knit into first stitch on back piece. Then follow steps 1-4 as outlined below. 1) insert needle as if to knit through first st on front needle and let the st drop from needle. 2) Insert needle into 2nd st on front needle as if to purl and pull the yarn through, leaving st on the needle. 3) Insert needle into first st on back needle as if to purl and let it drop from the needle, then 4) insert it as if to knit through 2nd st on back needle and pull the yarn through, leaving st on needle. Repeat 1-4 until all sts are gone. When finished, adjust tension as necessary. Weave in ends.

SOCK
With A, cast on 32 (36, 40) sts. Divide evenly onto double pointed needles. Join, taking care not to twist sts and place marker (pm) for beginning of round.
Work in k1, p1 rib for 1 in. (2.5 cm).
Work in St st until piece measures 3 1/2 (4, 4 1/2) in. (9 (10, 11.5 cm) from beg.
Shape Heel
K15 (17, 19) sts for heel, leave remaining sts unworked. Work back and forth in short rows for heel shaping.
Row 1 (WS): P14 (16, 18), SW next st, turn.
Row 2: K13 (15, 17) sts, SW next st, turn.
Repeat last 2 rows with 1 less st before SW until 8 sts remain.
Next Row (RS): K8, knit wrapped st, SW. turn.
Next Row: P9, purl wrapped st, SW, turn.
Repeat last 2 rows adding 1 more st each row until 15 (17, 19) sts have been worked.
Foot
Resume working in St st on all sts until foot measures 3 1/2 (4, 4 1/2) in. (9 (10, 11.5 cm) or desired length less about 1 ½ in. (3.8 cm), end last rnd 7 (8, 9) sts before beg of rnd marker. Move end of rnd marker to this point.
Shape Toe
Next Rnd: K8 (9, 10), pm for first marker, k16 (18, 20), pm for second marker, k8 (9, 10).
Next Rnd: K to last 3 sts before first marker, k2tog, k1, sl marker, k 1, ssk, k to 3 sts before second marker, k2tog, k1, sl marker, k1, ssk, k to end of rnd marker.
Next Rnd: Knit.
Repeat last 2 rnds until 8 sts remain. Divide sts onto 2 needles and graft sts together.
Ears (make 4)
With B, cast on 5 (6, 7) sts. Work in garter st (k every row), inc 1 st at each end every other row 3 times, every 4th row twice. Knit 3 rows.
Next Row: With B, k 5 (6, 7) sts, join C and k5 (6, 7) sts, join a second ball of B and k to end of row. Knit 6 rows in colors as established. Bind off.

FINISHING
Sew ears to sides of socks below ribbing. With B, embroider straight st eyes on front of sock. Weave in ends.

Knit Child's Elephant Socks Reviewed by Marlene Noyes on 2008-06-19 ***
These really turned out cute! This is the first time I have turned a heel in this manner. After several attempts to do it without ending up with a large hole at each side, I just sewed the holes together.

I think there is a mistake in the pattern where it says to work the toe decreases until you have 8 stitches left. That's much too pointy! I worked down to 16 and it will fit a human shaped foot now.
