Mother's Love

I myself have never made a prayer shawl, however, my mother does. When I was a freshman in college I had the unspeakable happen to me. At the age of 18, I went away from my parents. I was scared the way it was, but near the end of my first semester, I had to call my parents and tell them that their first daughter was raped. I couldn't sleep and just wanted to leave the college, understandably, I guess. I did decide after Christmas break that I was going to go back -- I didn't want that guy to win. My mother gave me a gift before I left and told me to open it when I got back to school but not till then. When I opened the gift it was a prayer shawl with a letter my mother wrote to me. In the letter she wrote about how with each stitch of yarn there was a prayer and a part of her love in it for me. I began calling the shawl mothers love because if it wasn't for all of the love that she put into the shawl I wouldn't have been able to stay at that college. When I was alone in my room, studying and when I was sleeping I would wrap the shawl around me in order to feel safe, it felt like my mothers arms were around me helping me through the loneliness and hurt that I felt.
I still sleep with my mother's love every night and use it when I am home sick. Three years later and that is still the best gift I have ever received. My mother still makes prayer shawls for friends, family and those in our church community. My mother is an amazing woman and her shawls have helped me and many others through a lot of hard times. I think she realized that when my younger sister made her one when she was sick in the hospital. I just want to thank the one who came up with prayer shawls and my mother and those who make them, they truly are helpful. |
