GAUGE:

17 sts + 22 rows = 4" [10 cm] in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

FRONT
Cast on 64 (68, 72) sts. Working in St st, increase 1 st each end every 16th row 3 times – 70 (74, 78) sts. Work even until piece measures 11" [28 cm] from beg; end with a WS row.

Shape Armhole
Bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows – 60 (64, 68) sts.
Dec Row (RS) K 1, (p 1, k 1) 3 times, p2tog, knit to last 9 sts, p2tog, k 1, (p 1, k 1) 3 times.
Next Row Rib 8 sts, purl to last 8 sts, rib 8 sts.
Continuing in pattern as established, rep Dec Row every other row 2 more times; every 4th row 7 times; then every other row 3 (5, 7) times. AT SAME TIME, when armhole measures 3 3/4 (4, 4 1/2)" [9.5 (10, 11.5) cm], bind off center 18 sts for neck, then work each side separately. After all shaping is complete, work 1 row even – 8 sts each side. Bind off.

BACK
Work as for Front to armhole.

Shape Armhole
Bind off 10 (9, 9) sts at beg of next 2 rows – 50 (56, 60) sts.
Dec Row (RS) K 1, (p 1, k 1) 3 times, p2tog, knit to last 9 sts, p2tog, k 1, (p 1, k 1) 3 times.
Next Row Rib 7 sts, k2tog, purl to last 9 sts, k2tog, rib 7 sts.
Rep last 2 rows until 17 sts remain. (Note Omit 1 dec on last Dec Row.)

Shape Back
Dec Row
Work to center 3 sts, work 3 together (using k3tog on RS, p3tog on WS), work to end of row.

Rep Dec Row every row until 9 sts remain. Work even on 9 sts for 1 1/2" [4 cm]. Cast on 17 sts at beg of next 2 rows – 43 sts. Work 0 (0, 2) rows even in K1, P1 Rib, then dec 1 st each end every other row 5 times – 33 sts. Bind off loosely in rib.

FINISHING
Sew side seams. Sew Front straps to shaped side edges of Back. Weave in ends.
