I used this pattern as a class project for those who knew how to crochet. It challenged some, but we got through it fine. Did find out that some pattern squares could use a bigger hook to come out the same as the other squares. One student liked the zig zag pattern so much she made a scarf using it.
I feel the popcorn stitch is "odd man out" and should be replaced with a stitch that is "smoother" like the other squares to give the afghan an overall flatter feel. But it is a good advanced-beginner pattern.
