17 sts + 91/2 rows = 4" [10 cm] in ripple pattern When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

sc2tog (sc decrease): Insert hook into stitch and draw up a loop. Insert hook into next stitch and draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.

To change color, work last stitch until 2 loops remain on hook, yarn over with new color, and draw yarn through 2 loops on hook to complete stitch.

*Work 4 rows with A, 4 rows with B, 4 rows with C, 4 rows with D, 4 rows with E; rep from * for Color Sequence.

AFGHAN With A, ch 101 (152).
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 6 ch, 3 sc in next ch, *sc in next 7 ch, sk next 2 ch, sc in next 7 ch, 3 sc in next ch; rep from *, ending sc in last 7 ch - 6 (9) "ripples".
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 6 sc, 3 sc in next sc, *sc in next 7 sc, sk next 2 sc, sc in next 7 sc, 3 sc in next sc; rep from * across, ending sc in next 6 sc, sc2tog.
Rep Row 2, changing colors following Color Sequence for a total of 60 (100 rows).
Last 4 Rows: With A, rep Row 2 four times.
Fasten off.

Left Side Edging

From RS, join A at top of left side.
Row 1: With A, working in ends of rows, sc evenly spaced along straight edge of afghan.
Rows 2-4: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.
Fasten off.
Right Side Edging
From RS, join B at lower corner of right side. Work as for Left Side Edging.
Weave in ends.

Shaded Blanket Reviewed by Patricia Stromgren on 2014-09-10 *****
This was so, so very easy. The pea green color was out of stock so substituted with dusty green. I decided to add a shell border just to dress it up a little and very pleased with the results.
