GAUGE:
9 stitches + 18 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in Garter stitch (knit every
row). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
SQUARE
Cast on 16 stitches. Work in Garter stitch until piece measures 9 inches [23 cm]. Bind off loosely. Weave in ends.

I made mine 8"x8" for another charity (Knit a Square) and have made several so far. It's a great way to use up leftovers and a wonderful way to contribute to a worthy cause.
