9 sts = 4" (10 cm) in seed st.

VINTAGE HAT (worked in the rnd)
With double-pointed needles, cast on 44 sts. Join, taking care not to twist sts. Rnd 1 *K 1, p 1; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k, (p and k) in last st (= 1-st increase). Rnd 2 P 1, *k 1, p 1, repeat from * around. Rnd 3 K 1, *p 1, k 1; repeat from * around. Repeat Rnds 2 and 3 for seed st until Hat is approximately 11" or desired length to include turn-back brim. Next Rnd *K3tog, p3tog; repeat from * around to last 3 sts, k3tog. Cut yarn, leaving a 10" tail. Thread tail through large-eyed, blunt needle, run through sts on needle twice to secure, drawing up tight. Weave in ends on inside of Hat.
VINTAGE HAT (worked flat)
With straight knitting needles, cast on 45 sts. Row 1 K 1, *p 1, k 1; repeat from *across. Repeat Row 1 for seed st until Hat is approximately 11" or desired length to include turn-back brim. New Row *K3tog, p3tog; repeat from * across to within last 3 sts, k3tog. Cut yarn, leaving a 10" tail. Thread tail through large-eyed, blunt needle, run through sts on needle twice to secure, drawing up tight. Weave in end on inside of Hat.
SEAMAN'S SCARF
With straight knitting needles, cast on 19 sts. Row 1 K 1, *p 1, k 1; repeat from * across. Repeat Row 1 for seed st until Scarf is 18" from beg. Next Row (RS) *(K 2, p 2) twice, k2tog, k 1, (p 2, k 2) twice – 18 sts. Row 2 P 2, *k 2, p 2; repeat from * across. Row 3 K 2, *p 2, k 2; repeat from * across. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until ribbed section is 15" long, ending with Row 2 of ribbing. Next Row (K 1, p 1) 4 times, (k and p) in next st, (k 1, p 1) 4 times, k 1 – 19 sts. Next Row K 1, *p 1, k 1; repeat from * across. Repeat last row for seed st for 18". Bind off in pattern. Weave in ends.
