9 sts + 12 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Stockinette St (k every round) BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

HAT
Cast on 44 (48, 52) sts, divide sts evenly across needles. Mark beg of rnd. Work 4 rounds Garter St (k one round, p the next). Change to Stockinette St and work 1 (1, 2) rows even.
Decrease 4 sts evenly spaced around – 40 (44, 48) sts. Work 4 rows even. Decrease 4 sts evenly spaced around – 36 (40, 44) sts. Work 3 rows even.
Dec 4 sts evenly spaced around – 32 (36, 40) sts. Work 1 row even. Repeat last 2 rows 2 (3, 4) times more – 24 sts. Dec 4 sts evenly spaced around – 20 sts. Repeat last row 2
times more –12 sts. Decrease 3 sts evenly spaced – 9 sts.
Repeat last row once more – 6 sts. Cut yarn leaving a 12" tail. Pull tail through remaining sts.
EARFLAPS
With RS facing, pick up and knit 7 (7, 9) sts along cast-on edge.
Next Row
Ssk, k across. Repeat last row until 1 st rem. Fasten off. Skip 18 (20, 20) sts across front and repeat instructions above for 2nd earflap. With crochet hook, work 1
round of sc around entire edge.
TASSELS
Cut 3 strands of yarn 15" long. Pull strands through point of earflap, meeting ends, tie overhand knot. Divide strands into 3 even groups and braid groups to desired length. Tie
overhand knot. Trim ends.
Top Loop
With crochet hook make a 2" chain from starting tail, fasten securely to inside.
