GAUGE: 23 sts + 29 rows = 4" (10 cm) In Stockinette st. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

SHELL FRONT
Cast on 91 (99, 107) sts. Shape for Waist Beg St st (k RS rows, p WS rows) and decrease 1 st at each end every 6th row 4 times. Work even on 83 (91, 99) sts until piece measures 4¼" from beg. Shape for Bust Inc on next RS row and every 8th row 7 times total. Work even on 97 (105, 113) sts until piece measures 12 inches total, end ready to work a RS row. Shape Armholes Bind off 9 (10, 11) sts at beg of next 2 rows – 79 (95, 91) sts. Bind off 3 sts beg next 2 rows, then 2 sts beg next 2 rows – 69 (75, 81) sts. Dec 1 st each end on next RS row and every other row 6 (6, 7) times, then every 4th row 0 (1, 2) times, then every 6th row 0 (1, 1) time. Work even on 57 (59, 61) sts until armholes measures 6½ (7, 7½)", end ready to work a RS row. Shape Shoulders and Neck Bind off 3 sts beg next 2 rows, then 2 sts beg next 2 rows – 47 (49, 51) sts. Dec 1 st each end on next RS row and every other row 3 times, then every 4th row once. Work even on 39 (41, 43) sts until neck measures 2½", bind off loosely. BACK
Work same as for Front until armholes measure 3½ (4, 4 ½)". Back Placket Opening Cont all shapings as for front but bind off center 3 sts on next row. Join a separate ball of yarn to other shoulder and, working both sides separately at same time, finish as for Front. There are 27 (28, 29) sts on either side after armhole shaping and 18 (19, 20) sts at final neck bind off. FINISHING
Sew side seams, sew shoulder and neck seams. Work 5 rows of sc evenly spaced around bottom edge and 3 rows of sc evenly spaced around armholes. Placket Trim: Row 1 With RS facing, sc evenly up left placket edge, work an extra sc at corner, sc evenly across neck edge, work an extra sc at corner, sc evenly down right placket edge, ch 1 and turn. Row 2 Sc in each sc around, working an extra sc at corners. Mark for 3 buttons evenly spaced along left placket edge,¼" from top and 1" from bottom. Row 3 Ch 1 and turn, sc in each sc, working an extra sc at corners to right placket. Opposite each marked button, make buttonhole by ch 3 and skipping 3 sc. Row 4 Ch 1 and turn, rep Row 2 working sc in each of ch-3 buttonholes. Row 5 Ch 1 and turn, rep Row 2, fasten off leaving 8" tail. Use tail to sew down sides of placket trim to 3 bound off sts of placket opening. Sew buttons in place.
