GAUGE:
18 stitches + 36 rows = 4 inches [10 cm] in stockinette stitch (knit a row, purl a row).
BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
Scarves 1 and 2
With A, cast on 27 stitches.
Row 1, Knit Row 2, Knit 4, purl 19, knit 4. Repeat Rows 1-2 for a total of 50 rows.
*Change to B, repeat Rows 1-2 for a total of 50 rows. Change to A, repeat Rows 1-2 for a total of 50 rows Repeat from * 4 times more, ending on a row of (A) Bind off. Weave in ends.
Scarves 3 and 4
With A, cast on 27 stitches.
Row 1, Knit Row 2, Knit 4, purl 19, knit 4. Repeat Rows 1-2 for a total of 50 rows. *Change to B, repeat Rows 1-2 for a total of 8 rows. Change to A, repeat Rows 1-2 for a total of 8 rows. Change to B, repeat Rows 1-2 for a total of 8 rows. Change to A, repeat Rows 1-2 for a total of 50 rows. Repeat from * 5 times more. Bind off. Weave in ends
Fringe
Cut strands of yarn approximately 9 inches [23 cm] long. For each fringe, hold 1 strands of yarn together and fold in half. Use crochet hook to draw fold through edge of garment, forming a loop. Pull ends of fringe through this loop. Pull to tighten. Make 27 fringes evenly across each end of scarf, alternating colors. Trim fringe if necessary.
