GAUGE: Each Square measures 8 inches to 8½ inches. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
STITCH EXPLANATION: SQUARE PATTERN: Row 1 (WS): Knit Row 2 (RS): Purl. Rows 3-4: Knit Row 5: Purl. Row 6: *K2tog, yo; rep from * across, end k2tog, yo, k 1. Row 7: Purl. Row 8: Knit. Rep Rows 1-8 for Square Pat.
|
NOTES: Always use 2 strands of yarn for each color.
|
THROW: Square A (make 18): With straight needles Size 11 and C, cast on 23 sts. Foll Square Pat, work 15 rows with C, ending with a WS row. Drop C, pick up W. Cont in Square Pat for 12 rows, ending with a WS row. Drop W, pick up C. Cont in Square Pat for 15 rows, ending with a RS row. Bind off from WS, with a knit row. Side Edge Finishing Row: With C, pick up 24 sts along side edge of Square A, turn. Bind off with a knit row. Work same Finishing Row on other side edge of Square A.
Square B (make 17): Work same as Square A, reversing colors: use W for C and C for W. Use C for Finishing Row along side edges.
Assembly: Join Squares in 7 strips with 5 Squares in each strip as foll: Strips #1, 3, 5, 7: Alternate 1 Square A horizontally and 1 Square B vertically until 5 Squares are joined. Strips #2, 4, & 6: Alternate 1 Square B vertically and 1 Square A horizontally until 5 Squares are joined. When 7 strips are completed, join strips alternately so that there is a checkerboard effect.
Finishing: Row 1: Join 2 strands of C at one corner and with circular needle Size 101/2, *pick up 24 sts along each Square to next corner; rep from * around entire throw (164 sts along each side edge; 120 sts along top and bottom), turn. Row 2: Knit. Row 3: Knit, inc 1 st inside first and last st on each side (8 incs made). Rows 4-9: Rep these 2 rows until 9 rows are completed. Row 10: Knit and bind off loosely.
Edging: Join 2 strands of W in one corner and with Size K crochet hook, work in reverse sc (working from left to right) as foll: 1 reverse sc in corner, *skip 1 st, ch 1, 1 reverse sc in next st; rep from * around, do not join. Rnd 2: *1 reverse sc in ch-1 space, ch 1, skip next reverse sc; rep from * around. Fasten off. Finish off all ends.

| Works up quickly. Exquisite in black and teal green, and I put it together with a strand each of black 4 ply and black eyelash yarn. Quite pretty.
