GAUGE:
14 sts and 19 rows = 4 inches on size 8 needles with two strands of
yarn held tog. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES:
1. Two strands of matching color are held tog throughout. 2. When changing colors, be sure to twist yarn on WS from underneath to avoid holes. 3. Color D sections have 10 rows more than B, C, E and F sections.
THROW: With two strands of A held tog, cast on 137 sts. Work in
St st (k on RS, p on WS), foll chart rep across row (4
times), plus the end st. Cont foll chart, working in the
foll color sequence: A, B, C, D, E and F. On foll row, cont
with D as est, then foll chart beg with chart Row 87 and
substitute C for E, B for F and A for D. When B section is
complete, work 4 rows in St st with A (not indicated on
chart). Bind off.
BORDER:
Top:
With RS facing and A, pick up and k 137 sts
along top of throw. Work in garter st (k every row), inc 1
st each side every other row in the foll color sequence:
Cont with A for 3 more rows, D for 4 rows, E for 4 rows,
then with F work 1 row and bind off on the foll row. Bottom:
Work same as for top border. Sides: With RS
facing and A, pick up and k approx 168 sts evenly spaced
along side edge of throw and work same border as for top and
bottom of throw. Rep for opposite side. Sew mitered corners.
The stitch diagram below is 21 inches long and twenty-three
inches wide; it is presented in six overlapping parts.

Knitted Southwestern Throw Reviewed by Liane on 2009-12-05
The blanket is beautiful but a lot of work--be patient. I crocheted the border with double yarn and size J hook. It gave this blanket a nice effect. I had to block the piece when I was done as the edges curl and it came out perfect. This is not an easy pattern and it took me quite a long time to make and I am an experienced knitter. You need a lot of big bobbins to hold the yarn. Had enough yarn left to make two small pillows.
