20 sts and 28 rows = 4" in St st When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

INITIALS COVER: With A, cast on 36 sts. Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 26 rows. Cont in ribbing working 6 rows B, 4 rows A, 6 rows C, 4 rows A, 6 rows B, then cont with A until ribbing measures 9", inc 8 sts evenly spaced across last row 44 sts.

Body: Beg on RS with a k row, work in St st for 36 rows. Cut yarn, leaving an 18˛ end for sewing. Thread yarn end and slip each st separately from knitting needle onto yarn; gather sts tightly and secure end.

FINISHING: Using B and following initials chart, duplicate stitch GDW or initials of your choice to center of front, beg the bottom of the initial 10 rows above ribbing. Sew back seam. Using C and following number chart, duplicate stitch the number 3 to the center of back, beg bottom of number 10 rows above ribbing. Using B and C, make a Pom-Pom and sew to top of cover.

Golf Club Covers with Initials Reviewed by Margie L Miller on 2015-06-29 *****
I made version C twice, once in 3 colors for my husbands college and once in orange and blue because he's a huge Syracuse fan. They were really easy to make and a hit with my hubby. I did buy a pom-pom maker as I couldn't do the cardboard method. Overstitching the letters and numbers was also very easy.
